Mitsubishi Concept-cX Diesel SUV

The MITSUBISHI Concept-cX represents a new-generation compact SUV, realizing an ideal balance between environmental and everyday practical performance. The concept car uses a new high-output, high-efficiency 1.8-liter clean diesel engine, featuring a variable geometry (VG) turbocharger for optimum boost control and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust system for compliance with Europe's Euro 5 emission standards. Mitsubishi's new Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission) adds superior power transmission efficiency for a powertrain that delivers nimble performance alongside excellent fuel economy and low emissions. Among the number of new environmental technologies applied in the Concept-cX is the extensive use of interior trim materials made from Mitsubishi's own Green Plastic - made from bamboo and other plant-based resins -- in a step to stop global warming and slow the depletion of our oil reserves.

MITSUBISHI Concept-cX offers a number of proposals for better utility and road performance. Its high seating position expands the driver's field of view, providing the drivability expected in a SUV; the 4100 mm compact body makes for easy maneuvering around town; and the split tailgate -- already well received on other Mitsubishi models -- for easy loading and unloading of luggage. In the performance department, Concept-cX uses Mitsubishi's electronically controlled 4WD system driven through large 225/45R19 tires to deliver intuitive handling and outstanding stability on all road surfaces.

The MITSUBISHI Concept-cX (‘Compact crossover’) will be shown at the 62nd Internationale Automobil Ausstellung (IAA; commonly known as the Frankfurt Motor Show) in September. Held at the Frankfurt Messe Complex, the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show will be open to the public from September 15 through 23, with press and media pre-viewing September 11 through 14.

Techart Porsche Cayenne Turbo Magnum

The new TECHART Magnum Based on the Latest 2008 Porsche Cayenne With more than 500 produced units the Magnum is the most successful model in the 20-year history of TECHART Automobildesign. At the Frankfurt International Auto Show IAA 2007 the new TECHART Magnum based on the latest Porsche Cayenne celebrates its world debut.

Like its predecessor the new TECHART Magnum sets itself apart with a spectacular aerodynamic-enhancement package that fits all versions of the Porsche SUV. All body components are manufactured from PUR-RIM plastic in OEM quality.

The curved TECHART fender flares add eight centimeters to the width of the Cayenne. The Magnum rocker panels provide a fluent transition between the wider wheel arches.

The new aprons for front and rear that replace their production counterparts were designed to correspond visually to the more pronounced contours of the wheel arches. The TECHART Magnum front apron lends the latest Cayenne generation an even more striking appearance. Its large air inlets feature elegantly styled slats and provide ample cooling air for radiators and front brakes. A total of four auxiliary headlights and daytime running lights improve active safety.

The TECHART Magnum rear apron with integrated diffuser reduces lift on the rear axle and provides the perfect backdrop for the TECHART stainless-steel sport exhaust system with two chrome tailpipes on either side.

The body conversion can be rounded out with moldings for front and rear lights, as well as with a new hood that features two air outlets that optimize heat balance in the engine bay.

The Magnum also features custom-tailored wheels and tires. The largest possible version features TECHART Formula II light-alloy wheels in size 10.5Jx22 in front and in size 11,5Jx22 in the rear. For optimal tires TECHART chose ContiCrossContact UHP tires in sizes 295/30 ZR 22 and 335/25 ZR 22, which are approved on the Cayenne for a top speed of 300 km/h.

These tires also make the Magnum a prime candidate for the engine tuning of the Cayenne Turbo that is currently under development and in its most powerful incarnation will produce up to 620 hp / 456 kW.

The air suspension of the Cayenne Turbo is modified with the TECHART sport module that lowers the ride height for enthusiastic on-road driving by 30 millimeters. The entire range of adjustment from the lowest ride height (loading level) to the highest (special off-road level) measures some 110 millimeters.

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

Porsche is renowned for its high-performance sports cars and sport utility vehicles (SUV), this week in Stuttgart demonstrated to the media a Cayenne SUV hybrid prototype, providing a glimpse of what the company will offer to consumers by the end of the decade.

Porsche is targeting average fuel consumption figures of 9.8 liters/100 kilometers in the New European Driving Cycle and about 24 miles per gallon in the US FTP cycle for the Cayenne Hybrid, and future developments may allow Porsche engineers to push towards an average fuel consumption figure of 8.9 liters/kilometer (approximately 26 miles per gallon).

The Cayenne Hybrid will feature a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission rather than having the hybrid drivetrain branching output along various lines and in various directions via a planetary gearset. Porsche selected this design because the in-line configuration of the hybrid components are more compatible with the existing Cayenne platform, this system in testing is more fuel efficient, and because this configuration is a better fit for Porsche as it will provide improved acceleration and engine flexibility compared to a conventional Cayenne.

Coordinating the car’s three main components – the combustion engine, the electric motor and the battery – is the Hybrid Manager, the heart of the Cayenne Hybrid. The Hybrid Manager, which oversees some 20,000 data parameters as compared to only 6,000 data parameters for a conventional engine, is one of the most powerful technologies found in any hybrid vehicle.

Other unique features of the Cayenne Hybrid designed to decrease fuel consumption include the power steering and vacuum pump for the brakes, as well as the air conditioning, which operate on electric power. Technical components, such as the oil pump in the Cayenne’s automatic transmission, have been replaced by electrically powered units. The Cayenne Hybrid’s electro-hydraulic steering – a first for a vehicle of its kind, will ensure the Cayenne Hybrid drives like a Porsche with predictable and safe handling characteristics and the agility that is expected of a Porsche SUV.

Porsche plans to introduce similar hybrid technology in a version of its Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. The Panamera will debut in 2009, with a hybrid to follow.

LUMMA BMW M6 CLR 600 S

After LUMMA DESIGNed spectacular widening modifications for the BMW M6 tuned as CLR 600 bonding it to racing sports and creating a furore, now the German tuner comes up with a somewhat smaller, but not less imposing version of the body kit. A Brawny CLR 600 S with an exclusive body kit and motor design package with carbon fibre parts and red laminated valve cover. LUMMA multispoke "Racing" wheels in 20 and 21-inchLowering centre of gravity through sport springs; sport exhaust system. Increased performance for M6; for BMW 630i up to 650i soon to follow

This available stylish design intended for all BMW 6-series including M6 and convertibles answers to the name of CLR 600 S. That S stands for street and that's where all shall be staring from in astonishment as LUMMA DESIGN together with additional modifications succeeds in significantly enhancing the attractiveness of each 6-series BMW.

The CLR 600 S body kit consisting in front of sleek designed front spoiler bumper along with striking air intake ducts in sporty designed form, already expresses pure power. A muscular package in the form of side sills with integrated air intake ducts behind, give the BMW 6-series a sturdier appearance. Same effect is provided in back by LUMMA's rear apron bumper with diffuser. To reduce lift, LUMMA builds an additional rear spoiler tear-off edge. Optionally instead is the availability of an imposing rear wing.

LUMMA installs and finishes each piece as requested in it's own in-house body shop. Each glances with the same quick and simple installation features as the original parts. Likewise with top quality. Whoever prefers parts and accessories to be shipped, receives ready complete pre-assembled parts. Naturally all arrive with TÜV parts certification. The CLR 600 S kit fits all BMW 6-series models no matter if it's 630i, 645i, 650i, M6 or their convertible versions.

Some pep in the motor area can also work wonders, thought LUMMA and take a look. after the German specialists built a special attractive motor package, the BMW 6-series motor radiates an unfamiliar brilliance. A package including two air intake plenums as well as an air filter housing each made of carbon fibre make this possible. In addition, as recognised in Italian sports cars, a red coloured valve cover.

The high-polished motor area matches perfectly to a LUMMA power enhancement. After the tuners already helped to bring the M-Version to a solid HP increase, LUMMA prepares a motor tuning program for models 630i - 650i. With help of a LUMMA sport exhaust system with four imposing 80mm rear tail pipes it publicizes it's enhanced power.

The reduction of centre of gravity provides greater driving agility. This achieves LUMMA through mounting of a H & R performance springs set that lowers the CLR 600 S by 30 mm.

LUMMA allows the CLR 600 S to tread on big feet. The LUMMA special "Racing" wheels are offered by these tuners in 20 and 21-inch. The elegant three-pieced wheels in timeless sporty multispoke design are manufactured from of a combination of aluminium and stainless steel. They are high gloss polished and have a wheel spider in silver, black or chrome. For the 20-inch version, LUMMA uses a combination of 9x20" tires with 245/35-20 (front) und 10x20" with 275/30-20. The larger alternative for more grip favours the front axle 9,5x21" with tires 255/30-21 and for the rear axle 10,5x21" with 295/25-21. The complete LUMMA wheel sets are equipped with high performance tires from LUMMA's technology partner Toyo.

Even the interior is not left untouched by LUMMA. Ultimately, it should fulfil the ambient expectations. LUMMAs interior not only fulfils expectations, but they in fact surpass them! Tinted gauges and an optionally extended speedometer to 360km/h are just the beginning. LUMMA offers for example a impressive, ergonomically formed sports steering wheel in wood/leather or carbon/leather combination. Aluminium foot pedals and as well aluminium foot rest provide further sporty nuances. Footmats sporting stitched logo makes the cockpit for all sportiness even more comfortable.

Mercedes High Torque DiesOtto Engine

The performance of a gasoline engine, the high torque and fuel economy of a state-of-the-art diesel together with extremely clean emissions: Mercedes-Benz has combined all the advantages of both engine types in its DiesOtto powertrain. The new technology package, which stands for the future of the gasoline engine, includes features such as direct gasoline injection, turbocharging and a variable compression. At the core of this innovation lies the controlled auto ignition, a highly efficient combustion process similar to that of a diesel. By way of another advantage, and in contrast to comparable developments, the Mercedes system requires no synthetic fuels but can be operated using conventional gasoline.

Optimising the internal combustion engine is one of the milestones on the Mercedes-Benz roadmap for sustainable mobility. BLUETEC has already made it possible for Mercedes engineers to make the powerful and economical diesel as clean as the gasoline engine. In the US this technology has already been available in the E-Class since 2006, and it will also become available in Europe from the end of this year. The E 300 BLUETEC will be by far the cleanest diesel in its class, and will meet the requirements of the EU5 exhaust emission standards in full.

"Our next goal will now be to make the gasoline engine as economical as a diesel. All the preconditions for this are provided by our DiesOtto concept, which incorporates the foremost strengths of both the gasoline engine and diesel engine," says Prof. Dr. Herbert Kohler, Head of Group Research & Advanced Engineering Vehicle and Powertrain; Chief Environmental Officer of DaimlerChrysler.

The result of this marriage is a four-cylinder unit with a displacement of just 1.8 litres, which combines the strengths of the low-emission gasoline engine with the fuel economy of a diesel. Despite its considerably reduced displacement – downsizing is one of the major factors for achieving a lower fuel consumption – this compact power unit delivers superior performance together with refinement at the level of the luxury class. An output of 175 kW/238 hp and a maximum torque of 400 newton metres are achieved together with the hybridisation a fuel consumption of less than six litres of gasoline per 100 kilometres. This figure by no means relates to a small or compact car, but to a vehicle the size of the current S-Class, with the level of comfort and safety that is typical of a Mercedes.

Mercedes-Benz DiesOtto – a further development of the spark-ignition engine

" In line with the worldwide success of today's diesel engine, vehicles equipped with gasoline engines will continue to have a long-term attraction for many customers and in many markets. Accordingly we are giving our attention to both engine types – including a full hybrid option for diesel and gasoline vehicles, says Prof. Kohler. Mercedes-Benz is working on its DiesOtto concept with corresponding emphasis. Its key technological features are as follows:

Downsizing with fewer cylinders and a smaller displacement
Turbocharging for superior performance
Direct gasoline injection as a further fuel economy measure
Controlled auto ignition, a combustion process similar to that of a diesel
Variable valve control
A variable compression ratio leading to even better fuel economy and, depending on customer needs and the type of operation,
A hybrid module with an integrated starter/generator, which makes the drive unit even more economical.

When starting and under full load, the fuel/air mixture is ignited by a spark plug, as in a conventional spark-ignition engine (homogeneous combustion). The controlled auto ignition to which the DiesOtto automatically reverts within its working cycle occurs under partial load conditions, i.e. at low and medium engine speeds.

The result is the very low nitrogen oxide emissions of homogeneous combustion at reduced reaction temperatures. All further emissions control in the DiesOtto engine is by means of a standard three-way catalytic converter. A highly efficient engine management and control system has also been realised to combine the individual sub-systems into a drive concept.

The current prospects for the future of the internal combustion engine reveal its great potential, and show that the new drive concept is a feasible proposition in the mid-term. Some of the intermediate solutions incorporated, e.g. direct gasoline injection, are already in series production at Mercedes-Benz. Others will be gradually integrated into series-production engines until the overall solution has been realised.

Kia Sports Coupe

Kia Motors is to unveil a dramatic 2+2 sports coupe concept – the work of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer – at the IAA Auto Show in Frankfurt.. Revealing a first ‘preview image’ of the car, Schreyer said: “Kia has given me the opportunity to shape its whole brand design and character. Seldom does a designer have such a clean sheet to work with.

“We started this exciting journey with the Kia ex_cee’d cabrio concept at the Geneva Show back in March, and at Frankfurt I’m sure Kia will surprise the entire automotive world when people see our new sports coupe concept in the metal.”

The new concept – its name remains secret for now – has an imposing road presence and was designed by Schreyer at Kia’s Frankfurt Design studio and was built in Europe.

The ex_cee’d cabrio concept was Schreyer’s first design after joining Kia in September last year, but the 53-year-old Bavarian had previously indicated that Frankfurt would be the target for his unveiling of a new face for Kia products in the future. The sports coupe concept is his design statement for Kia and heralds a future product strategy focussed on design.

Schreyer was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the Royal College of Art in London in recognition of the contribution he has made to automotive design over the last 25 years.

Peugeot 4007

The Peugeot 4007 is the first SUV to be launched by Peugeot and extends the brand virtues of style, dynamism, innovation and quality. Positioned in the heart of the SUV market, 4007 has been designed to attract new customers who are looking for something distinctive.

The 4007 extends the Peugeot product portfolio and features an innovative electronically controlled four-wheel drive system, latest generation HDi engine technology and a versatile, dynamic and flexible interior which can transport up to seven in style and comfort.

The joint collaboration between the PSA Peugeot Citroën group and the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation has produced the 4007 – a vehicle that combines a high-driving position, distinctive appearance, a 5+2 seat configuration and ‘on-demand’ 4WD system. This combined with Peugeot’s class-leading HDi engine means it:

Emits less CO2 than some family cars due to its efficient HDi engine
Returns impressive mpg performance (39.2 mpg on the Combined Cycle)
Operates only in 4WD mode – when road conditions necessitate
Is fitted with Peugeot’s industry leading Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS) reducing exhaust particulate emissions to virtually zero, unlike a conventional SUV

On-Demand 4WD System
One of the most important engineering credentials of the 4007 is its innovative electronic ‘on-demand’ 4WD system. Unlike many other systems, the 4007 enables the driver to select three modes of drive, while on the move:

Permanent 2WD – great for the majority of times when travelling around town or on a motorway, with all power directed to the front wheels
Automatic 4WD – engine torque is delivered automatically to wheels that require the most traction at any time
Permanent 4WD – splits torque 50:50 between front and rear wheels making it perfect for when the going gets tough

This technology gives 4007 the ‘best of both worlds’, for it can tackle some of the roughest terrain, yet still provides excellent on-road dynamic behaviour and excellent fuel economy.

PRODUCT & PRICING
Powertrain
Powering 4007 is a variation of the 2.2-litre HDi engine first seen in the 407 HDi 170. In this application, it produces 156 bhp at 4000 rpm, but its torque increases to an exceptionally strong 380 Nm at just 2,000 revs. The flexibility of this engine makes it very tractable when performing off-road and gives fantastic performance on road too. The 2.2-litre HDi 156 engine with 6-speed manual transmission emits just 191 g/km CO2 and is fitted as standard with a diesel particulate filter system (DPFS) – technology pioneered by Peugeot back in 2000.

Audi Cleaner TDi Engines

From mid-2008 Audi will be putting the cleanest diesel technology in the world into series production. The new TDI engines with their ultra-low emission system combine the spontaneous performance and superior pulling power of today’s TDI power units with outstanding fuel consumption figures and incomparably low emissions. Indeed, they will already undercut the most stringent emissions limits that are to be applied in the future in Europe as soon as production starts. Just as the entire Audi range complied with the Euro 4 standard and the forthcoming Euro 5 emissions limits years in advance, the Ingolstadt brand is once again set to assume its role as the pioneer of groundbreaking technology.

For Audi, the trendsetting TDI engine is a core element of its integrated technology strategy. “We intend to consolidate the status of the TDI as a highly efficient form of propulsion on a sustained basis. And in future we will be launching ‘e’ model variants designed for optimised fuel consumption in the high-volume model series – either in TDI guise or as petrol models with state-of-the-art TFSI technology,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the AUDI AG Board of Management.

Maximum efficiency is the recipe for success

“Audi is a trailblazer when it comes to diesel power. Since 1989, over 4.5 millions cars have rolled off the production line with the highly efficient TDI technology under the bonnet. By equipping the R10 TDI sports prototype with this technology, we have just won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel-powered car for the second time. The Audi R8 racing cars with TFSI petrol direct injection took victory on five occasions at Le Mans. We have been incorporating the key findings from the world of motorsport directly into series-production development,” emphasises Michael Dick, Board Member for Technical Development at AUDI AG. “By so doing, we are demonstrating how TDI and TFSI represent the ultimate in efficiency, driving pleasure and economy both on the road and on the racetrack.”

The latest TDI generation sees Audi reaffirm its leadership claim in the field of ultra-sophisticated diesel technology. When Audi started up series production of the first passenger-car TDI engine in 1989, it marked a key milestone in the advancement of automotive technology. Audi TDI soon became a byword for supreme pulling power plus maximum efficiency and, what's more, the pacemaker for the automotive industry as a whole. Even today, the spontaneous performance combined with extremely low fuel consumption achieved by the turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine remains unsurpassed by any other drive system under realistic conditions.

Consistent strategy throughout all model series

With its latest generation of TDI engines, Audi is now out to prove that this high-tech drive unit still has high potential and a guaranteed future: thanks to the optimised combustion process and the inclusion of an ultra-low emission system, these models comply with the BIN 5 emissions requirements in the US as well as meeting the toughest standards expected to come into force in Europe for the foreseeable future.

Audi is kicking off its consistent TDI strategy for 2008 with the three-litre V6 units in the Audi A4 and Audi Q7. Developing 176 kW (240 bhp) and a supreme peak torque of 500 Nm in the Audi A4 and 550 Nm in the Audi Q7, they boast the sublime dynamism combined with relatively low fuel consumption that is the hallmark of any Audi. Additional models will follow in rapid succession, with Audi seeking to extend the new technology to other vehicle classes and power categories by 2010.

Innovative technology for minimised emissions

This new technology from Audi takes the TDI principle of diesel direct injection with turbocharging that has been proven a million times over and launches it into a whole new dimension. To do this, the diesel-engine development engineers at Audi have incorporated a whole raft of innovative measures into the latest TDI generation: the new piezoelectric common-rail system with an injection pressure of 2,000 bar, the extremely efficient exhaust gas recirculation and optimised turbocharging bring about a dramatic cut in untreated engine emissions. One of the highlights are the combustion chamber sensors that enable even more precise regulation of the combustion processes in the engine – this is the first time that such sensors have been fitted on any engine in the world, marking yet another Audi innovation.

The status of the new-generation TDI as the definitive clean-running, high-tech diesel is sealed by the downstream ultra-low emission system which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 percent. The ultra-low emission system runs on a biodegradable additive in the form of a solution called AdBlue. Tiny doses of this solution are injected upstream from the DeNOx catalytic converter. The ultra-low emission system as a whole comprises the catalytic converter, the metering module, the AdBlue tank and heated lines, as well as an extensive system of sensors. The comprehensive emission control system is rounded off by the separate two-way catalytic converter and the highly efficient, electronically controlled diesel particulate filter.

Great potential for reducing fuel consumption all around the world

Thanks to their extremely low emission levels, these cutting-edge direct-injection diesel engines can be put into service anywhere in the world, even in the US state of California where the most stringent emissions limits are enforced. Compared to the average fleet consumption of petrol engines typically fitted in the USA, the TDI offers a fuel saving of as much as 35 percent. As a consequence, diesel technology can make a greater contribution to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and emissions of environmentally harmful greenhouse gases than any other form of propulsion currently available. Audi will be marketing these new models in the USA and in Europe from the second half of 2008.

Hybrid systems for a number of models

Nevertheless, there may also be a call for a hybrid system designed for individual markets and to meet specific requirements. Audi is developing hybrid systems for a number of model series and will put them into series production wherever it sees this as producing significant benefits for customers. Audi unveiled the Audi Q7 hybrid study with an electric motor integrated into the driveline between engine and gearbox back in 2005. Designed as a “full” hybrid, as it is known, the Audi Q7 can run on either the petrol engine or the electric motor alone or be powered by both in unison. During phases when the vehicle is coasting or braking, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy, fed to the battery and then transformed into propulsive power as and when required.
